For 25 years, Possumwood has been a lifeline for Australia's native wildlife. More than 12,000 injured, sick, and orphaned animals have come through our gates, with around 500 animals requiring emergency rescue every year and a further 250 cared for annually in our veterinary hospital.
Getting to them in time is everything. Until now, we've relied on our own personal vehicles to transport injured wildlife. These cars have served us well, but after decades of use and with the growing demands of our vet hospital, they're no longer enough.
Our trusty Subaru Forrester is still going strong, but our 2007 Pajero has finally given up - the mechanic says it needs a new engine, and at $9,000 to repair, it's not worth it. We need to replace it.
The fires of 2019-2020 showed us just how critical reliable transport is. Every night, I'd transport burned kangaroos from Two Thumbs Sanctuary to Possumwood - a 2-hour trip on dirt country roads with no phone contact for half the journey. We often travel lonely, rough roads with animals in the car - it's all part of the job, but we need a vehicle up to the task.
We're urgently seeking a fit-for-purpose wildlife rescue and patient transport vehicle. We can contribute some of the cost ourselves, but we're facing a $40,000 shortfall . Your donation will help us reach animals faster, treat them sooner, and give them the best chance to survive.
From all of us at Possumwood - thank you for caring, and for standing with Australia's wildlife when they need it most ❤️
